Every now and then, an innovation is announced which makes tech enthusiasts like myself excited. Sony just announced LinkBuds (WF-L900), a unique earbuds design that offers a new wearable experience. It retails in Singapore for S$269 and will be available from 24 Feb 2022. I have completed my full review and you can read it here.

At first look, I wondered how the earbuds are worn. There does not seem to have any conventional driver diaphragm. Indeed, Sony developed a new ring driver unit with the centre of the diaphragm open for audio transparency. This basically solves 2 important use cases for people wearing earbuds:
- Able to hear the environment sound.
- Able to wear the earbuds for long periods.
There are many ways to achieve the above, like on-ear buds, bone conduction headsets, activating ambient sound, open-back headphones. Sony LinkBuds design is sleek and sits flushed within the ear concha. Without the need of any electronic ambient sound mode, the earbuds last longer. The rated battery life is 5.5 hours for continuous use, but standby (waiting) time would be 11 hours. The case adds another 12 hours, while a quick 10-minute charge can add 90 minutes of play time.

A few nifty features will keep you wearing the LinkBuds without the need to remove them. First, there is the Speak-to-Chat feature found in the WF-1000XM4 whereby the music is automatically paused when you start talking. Then there is the Wide Area Tap that lets you control the LinkBuds by tapping near the ears without touching the earbuds.

The new Sony LinkBuds support various technologies like 360 Reality Audio, Microsoft Soundscape, Google Fast Pair, Windows Swift Pair, Spotify Tap. The next important thing to ask is: how do they sound? I have completed my review and you can read it here.
