When Technics launched the true wireless earbuds, AZ60, they already teased that an over-ear headphones is in the works. They have finally announced the EAH-A800 during CES 2022.

And just like what they did with the AZ70, Technics pulled no punches and included top specs. It’s basically the headphone version of the true wireless earbuds with more space to include better hardware, like 8 high performance MEMS microphones to offer greater call clarity, improve background noise reduction and wind noise suppression. The newly-developed PEEK/Polyurethane 3-layer 40mm dynamic driver uses a free edge diaphragm in the dome and edge for optimal strength and flexibility. The Acoustic Control Chamber controls air flow to deliver precise bass and rich spatial expression. The use of thin-film polymer multi-layer capacitors which Technics uses for their high-grade audio amplifiers ensures a stable current delivered through the audio circuit, limiting distortion to achieve better high-quality sound.

The EAH-A800 also comes with industry-leading ANC and ambient sound modes, which can be adjusted through the Technics Audio Connect app. Judging from the quality of the AZ60, I am expecting nothing less from A800, so it remains to be seen if the A800 will outmatch the incumbents Sony WH-1000XM4 or Bose 700. Battery life is an astounding 50 hours (with ANC On, AAC codec), or 40 hours with ANC on and enabling LDAC 24-bit 96kHz high-resolution wireless audio codec. Other popular features include multipoint pairing (connects two devices simultaneously) and wear detection which auto-pauses music.

The headphones will be available in Europe from February at £299. Availability in Singapore will be made known later.
