D-Link’s latest smart plug, DSP-W118, is so tiny, it puts all other brands and models into obsolescence. They retail at S$27.90 available at Challenger, Hachi.Tech.
Unboxing
The small box comes with the small plug and quick installation guide.
Set Up
Install mydlink smartphone app and after you log in, swipe from the left to reveal the side menu, and click “Add a Device”. Scan the QR code printed on the side of the smart plug and follow on-screen instructions. All should be done within 5 minutes. The smart plug connects via Wi-Fi, so you do not need any additional hub.
Why Do You Need One?
The DSP-W118 works with Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa. From the respective ecosystem’s smart app, e.g. Google Home, connect to mydlink Smart then it will auto-detect any available devices that can be added to the Google Home. Rename the device from Google Home, then in future you can voice command the D-Link smart plug by saying the name. Say “Hey Google, turn On [smart plug name]”.
If you do not use Alexa or Google, you can set up automation rules from the mydlink app. For instance, if you have an existing D-Link smart sensors, you can program to auto power-on when motion is detected. Or you can set timer for the entire week to decide when to turn on or turn off the device.
It instantly transforms your normal appliances into a “smart” appliance. Best of all, the W118 is so small, it’s smaller than a multi-plug adapter.
The actual dimension is 58x58mm from the top, 42mm thick. This is how it fits in my power extension cord at home.
Comparing other brands like Aztech Kyla, which is considered one of the more compact smart plugs in the market – until the W118 comes along.
The Kyla smart plug is less thick, but extends longer. It was my favourite smart plug, until the W118 comes along.
Conclusion
I have nothing bad to say about the D-Link DSP-W118 smart plug. The size is superb, the functions work, the automation commands are instant. The power button located on top of the smart plug is just about right.
