Star Shield has been operating in Singapore since 2008, and is synonymous with Challenger, as they have a close tie-up with them in offering extended warranty and repair services, with a presence in many of their retail outlets. Recently, they wrote to me to help them do a simple shoutout on their service. To be honest, I was surprised that they are still around! The last time when I was looking for SSD upgrade service, I went for PC Dreams, partly because of their strong engagement at Hardware Zone forum over the years.

While PC Dreams focuses on trade-ins and resale of refurbished sets, Star Shield’s main business is in offering extended warranty coverage. I browsed their Facebook Page and website to understand what services and promotions they have.
Extended Warranty
When you purchase a computer desktop, laptop, tablet, smartphone or printer, you can purchase an extended warranty from Star Shield (price varies from product value). The extended warranty is up to 2 years from Star Shield up to a maximum of 4 years from date of equipment purchase. You can purchase an extended warranty any time within 9 months of your original date of purchase, as long as the product has a valid local warranty.

Accidental Damage Protection
This plan should interest tablet users: if your tablet screen is cracked, Star Shield can replace for you. It also covers laptops below S$400. Coverage price varies from S$29.90 to S$49.90.
Star Shield ELITE
For Challenger’s Value Club members, they can enjoy a special 2-year comprehensive coverage plan for an additional 15% of the product purchase price. This plan is only available for purchase in-stores on the day of the purchase. This plan covers a wide range of devices, more than the above. Check the full list on their website.

Repair Services
Star Shield also offers repair services, with special price for existing Star Shield and Challenger Value Club members. For actual price, enquire with them directly.
Current Promotion: SSD Upgrade
Star Shield is having a promotion to upgrade your SSD with OS re-install at at S$120 (with 240GB SSD). Promotion ends 31 July 2019.

This is a very attractive offer for those who are not so savvy about hardware stuff. I highly recommend anyone to upgrade their existing desktop or laptop from the slow HDD, which peaks at a transfer rate of around 40MB/s, to SSD, which can go beyond 500MB/s (depending on brand). Even if you are not signing up with Star Shield, you should do it anyway. But let me warn you: the tricky part of SSD hardware upgrade is not just dismantling the laptop, but also on cloning the drive. You need specialised software (for instance, EaseUS) and cables. Anyway, for S$120, I think it is worth the price for all the hassle. I’m not sure what’s the brand of SSD they are using, but I believe it should come with warranty too. Or maybe they will allow upgrade of a better brand.
Free Star Shield Vouchers (updated 7 July 2019)
For my collaboration, Star Shield sent me a stack of vouchers that can be used to redeem Star Shield’s repair or upgrading services. The voucher can be applicable to the SSD promotion. The first 10 respondents will receive one $40 and two $10 vouchers, drop me a private message on Instagram or Facebook Messenger. Note: one voucher per repair/upgrade service and cannot be combined. $40 voucher expires 31 Aug 2019, $10 voucher expires 30 June 2020.
