As far as I know, when doing mobile port-in from one telco to another, you need to sign up for a new mobile line from the new telco at the same time. Technically you can port-in to an existing mobile line, but you need to visit a service centre, or call the hotline to get some assistance. Anything but self-help.
I just found out that giga! lets you port-in your existing mobile number from another telco to your existing giga! line through their app. And I thought it’s a fabulous idea!
Chope #1: Get Your New giga! Line First
One of the worries about number port is that during the sign-up process, you might encounter unexpected hiccups. Or you might not like the new telco’s network coverage or the app. Or you might even change your mind.
With this process, you can sign up a giga! line first so that you can try out the service, and once you’re good and happy, you can then apply to port-in your other line to replace your giga! number without spending extra money.
But if you still prefer to traditional process, then at step 1 of the order, go into the “Port-in number” tab instead of “Get new number”, and that will bring you to the below screen immediately.
Apply Port-In from the App
Any time during your giga subscription, when you are ready to port-in, just go to the app menu and select “Port-in to giga”. Enter your existing telco’s number and select the giga number to be replaced.
Then, wait for the next working day to be processed and if all goes well, your number from the other telco will replace your giga! line.
I prefer this 2-step method as it breaks down the port-in process, and it breaks the dependency between SIM card purchase and the actual port-in steps.
Chope #2: Choose Your Own Activation Date
After receiving your new giga! SIM card, your billing cycle starts only when you activate the SIM card by inserting it into your phone. Talk about getting a nice mobile number first and start the plan later – giga lets you ‘chope’!
So imagine your existing telco contract ends next month, but you don’t want to miss out on the promo code. What you can do is to sign up now with the promo code, and when you receive the SIM card, do not insert into the phone yet. Wait until your contract is ended, then activate your giga line, then apply for port-in.
Chope #3: Submit Change Plan First, But Takes Effect Next Charging Cycle
When you change plan, it only takes effect during the next charging month. That means if there is a pop-up plan, you can select it first, even though the limited plan expires before your next charging cycle, you will still be able to change to the new plan. Here’s another benefit: you can cancel your change plan anytime before the new plan takes effect. A great option for those who changes mind too often. Another ‘chope’-friendly feature!
