Bone conduction headphones have been in the market for years, and they are mainly worn by active outdoor sports people who needs to remain aware of the surroundings. It is this exact reason that makes it applicable to kids, allowing them to enjoy music without excessive sound pressure against their young ears.
Singapore kids tech company myFirst has previously offered a wired version of the bone conduction headphones, but with the launch of myFirst Fone R1, they also developed a Bluetooth wireless version so that it can work with the watch phone.

On the right “earbud” is a touch sensor that lets you control playback and answer phone calls. On the controller behind the right earbud is the volume control and power button, as well as the charging pin.
I’m not going to lie to you, they do not delivery hi-fi accuracy. The midrange is forward while the bass is loose and the treble dissipates depending on how you place the drivers. But young kids don’t need overwhelming sound pressure blasting into their ears. The interesting fact I found out is that when I let my young relatives they them, their first impression is that “it’s clear” and “useful”. It goes to show the kind of simple audio expectations they actually have.
The headphones fit on adult heads like mine too, and frankly, I don’t mind using them for casual background listening while being aware of the surroundings. The next best thing to enjoy private music without stuffing earbuds in or around my ears is probably the Bose Frames, but I can’t wear the shades indoors.
If I had this headphones when my daughter was younger, I would have gotten her this to start her personal audio journey, and only to move on to headphones as she grows older. Wearing the myFirst Headphones BC Wireless also guarantees the child can hear you calling them out at home.
Verdict
The BC Wireless headphones is the perfect companion to the Fone R1. Pair them together via Bluetooth and your child will be able to make calls clearly and privately. They are well-built to withstand abuse. Retailing at S$109, it comes free with every pre-order of the Fone R1 (limited to first 1,000 customers), visit the official page for more information.
